TUF 9 Final Episode Recap and Results!

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Unfortunately, the suspense for the final bout was ruined, since the results were posted all over the internet for a week. Regardless, we were treated to a fun fight.

Hendo heads over to the house for BBQed ribs and to enjoy some down time with his team since the end is nigh. He also gives some subtle support to Frank Lester who is scheduled to fight James Wilks. Team US stand out DaMarques Johnson also takes some time out when he and Frank Lester are alone and gives him a pep talk. Lester seems to be well liked and respected by all. Some of the guys call him “Frankie 4 teeth”.

The respect for Lester comes from the fact that this will be his 4th fight (according to him, 3rd on the show) in a little more than a month. The guy is walking around busted up, with cuts, a black eye, bruises, etc. Yet he is still motivated and passionate. His primary motivation is his 19 month old daughter, whose pictures are taped up on a wall near his bed as a reminder. Lester is a hard guy not to like.

After a similar dinner with team UK and coach Bisping, some shenanigans are unleashed at the table, when Andre Winner goes from spitting food out to throwing a handful of the curry Dean Amasinger made across his neck and face. Winner takes off out of the house with Dean following. Dean tosses him into the pool and as he comes out Faulkner dumps a pound of flour on him and everyone has a good laugh. This entire event defines why Team UK has done so well: they understand what it means to be a team, how to relax, and develop camaraderie.

Wilks and Lester share a sauna together and their friendship is apparent. Lester tells Wilks that he expects to perform better since he has no anger for his opponent, therefore he will be more relaxed.

Welterweight Semi-Final: Frank Lester vs. James Wilks II
The rematch is similar to the first bout in many ways. Lester’s power is apparent as he has Wilks hurt a few times. Wilks demonstrates that he has the will, desire and certainly the skillset as he transitions from striking to the clinch effortlessly. He has no success with his many takedowns, as Lester’s takedown defense is up to snuff. As the rounds pass on, Lester fatigues (over-training and over-competing?) and Wilks’ confidence increases to the point of showboating.

In the 3rd round, Wilks eventually catches Lester in a good Thai Clinc/Pramb and unleashes some vicious knees. Lester goes down hurt, but as expected springs back up to keep going, but Wilks seizes the moment and batters Lester back down for good before the heferee jumps in and stops it.

James Wilks def. Frank Lester by TKO (strikes) 2:21 of RD3!

Lester is apologetic in the locker room, but everyone shoots it down as he has no reason to apologize. Wilks is elated that he is going to Vegas, and deservedly so as he has proven he has what it takes. Unfortunate for him, is DaMarques has taken a serious dislike to Wilks and it has put a fire under Johnson. Wilks will have a monster across the ring from him come Saturday night.

All in all a decent season of TUF, and one I am glad was drama free. Mainly thanks to Julie Browning’s little sister getting booted off early on. The Brits demonstrated that they are more than capable as a nation of MMAists, and have loudly announced their presence.

TUF 9 Episode 10: Benedict Pierce!

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

This episode revolves around the Team US traitor, liar and douchebag Jason “Benedict” Pierce. This is the guy that wins a fight to get on the show, then refuses to spar and train, and exaggerates an injury to get out of more training and future fights. He has no desire to be a fighter.

To add to the fact that he shouldn’t be on the show, he from the very beginning, has befriended the UK team in general, and David Faulkner specifically to the alienation of his US team. Since he doesn’t actually workout he observes the US team training and relays what they are working on and what their habits are to the UK team. When Hendo confronts him and asks if he is doing this, he lies right to Dan’s face. He denies it 100% after we just watched footage of him doing that.

During a BBQ for both teams Whitson walks in on Benedict crying to David Faulkner in the kitchen. He is complaining about his US team mates behavior. Whitson calls him out on it and Benedict states “I don’t talk to you guys because your dumb fu&ks. You guys get drunk, you break bottles. You break dishes, you act like fu%cking animals.” Whitson calls him out about not training and fighting and all of a sudden since he has a smaller guy in front of him, he is capable of fighting and tells Whitson to “Jump a weight class.”

He can’t run or hide. His Karma will catch up with him.

The show starts out with a meeting between BLAF and team coaches Bisping and Hendo. They are to decide who will be fighting whom in the finals. They have the fighters come in and state who they would like to fight. Cameron Dollar whose dislike for fellow team mate Jason Dent has been evident from the beginning of the season, states that he’d like to fight Dent. Everyone gets a kick out of it and it gives BLAF pause for thought. He asks the coaches what they think of having team mates fight one another to get into the finals, that way the very last fights will be Team US vs. Team UK no matter what.

Eventually they decide against it. Here are the final fights:

Welterweight Semifinals
DaMarques Johnson vs. Nick Osipczak
Frank Lester vs. James Wilks

Lightweight Semifinals
Cameron Dollar vs. Andre Winner
Jason Dent vs. Ross Pearson

Welterweight Semifinals: DaMarques Johnson vs. Nick Osipczak
Describing this fight will do it no justice. You have to see it. www.mma-core.com is a great website that usually has the videos, so if you haven’t seen it, you have to. The first round was epic and later BLAF even says “That was one of the best rounds I have ever seen.” A round where both fighters are rocked and hurt, DeMarques being the most stunned and taking bomb after bomb to the face, but responding by swinging right back. Glimpses of Gatti.Ward 1 came to mind. DaMarques controlled 4 minutes of the round regardless. The second round is more excitement, with DaMarques coming on stronger and landing more.

The next 2 rounds demonstrate who wants it more as DaMarques continues to dominate on the ground since Nick has ZERO defense against the takedowns and Johnson also lands the bigger punches. By the end of the 2nd it doesn’t even look like Nick is going to come out for the 3rd, but he does. Only to be met with more punches, a takedown and more dominance on the ground. In the last minute Nick manages a reversal and is in Johnson’s guard but is too exhausted to do any damage.

Nick demonstrates a GREAT beard and some decent leg kicks that took their toll on Johnson. He just needs to SET the kicks up.

DaMarques Johnson def. Nick Osipczak by UD and goes on to the finals in Vegas.
