Full Results of the EliteXC Unfinished Business Card!

Dana White’s “Big” Announcement?!
As mentioned in an earlier article, Dana White had a “big” announcement to make during the replay of UFC 84, last night. Of course, obvious to all is that it wasn’t going to be “big” at all, but a ploy by Dana to draw attention away from the EliteXC “Unfinished Business” card, in what he feels is another attack in his efforts to establish a monopoly. His last “big” announcement that was supposed to shock the MMA world was that Lorenzo Fertitta was stepping down from his position and going to be assisting Dana in a more active manner with promotions. For that we got lead on for days and weeks, in the interim while he had our attention he told us about UFC Lighters, Credit Cards, and figurines.

Pretty sneaky.

Anyhow, this “big” announcement was that UFC 89 will be televised on free TV on Spike. I imagine the next big announcement he’ll have is that his nickname is BLAF. I can tell you when this announcement will be if you can tell me when the next DREAM, EliteXC, or Affliction card is, whichever comes first.

Antonio Margarito TKO’s Cotto!
Antonio Margarito is as one of the commentators said, “a moving WALL that hits you and keeps coming forward”. Weathering the early storm of fast paced movement, and power shots by Miguel Cotto, Antonio kept coming forward, punching and kept right in Cotto’s face, never giving him a chance on his way to a TKO victory in the 11th. In the early rounds, while Cotto kept lateral movement and punching, Margarito had a difficult time landing solid blows, but did accumulate a fair amount. The pace was too much for Cotto, for every time he would stop moving Margarito would be right there, landing combos and hard power shots. By the time the 11th round came around, a few hard shots forced Cotto to take a knee. A combination of being smothered, constantly stalked and hit, and fatigue followed by hard shots, made Cotto wisely take a knee to get a break. However, it only delayed the inevitable, for as soon as he stood: there was Margarito right in his his chest. Another knockdown and it could be seen all over Cotto’s. He was nodding as if to tell the ref or his cornerman, that he wanted no more and after his corner threw in the towel the ref waved off the fight.

As people have been saying for months, THIS is why Mayweather has been dodging Margarito, before finally convincing even the biggest Mayweather fan, he definitely wanted no part of Margarito and instead took on Baldomir for a quick and easy pay day, before finally retiring.

Floyd, we all know. It’s obvious.

What’s next for Margarito?

Anderson Silva to defend title against Patrick Cote at UFC 90!
In what was tentatively scheduled for UFC 89, has been officially moved to UFC 90 in Chicago, on October 25th: Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote for Silva’s middleweight belt and return to the middleweight division after a foray into the Light Heavyweight Division at UFC FN 14 in his destruction of James Irvin. Cote is coming off of a VERY impressive win over Ricardo Almeida at UFC 86. However, does anyone think this fight will be competitive? No offense to Cote, as I’m a fan. How about BLAF drops his Napoleon complex and allows some Middleweights from other organizations have a go? Kind of like when he sent Chuck over to Pride?

Though not saying these guys would beat Anderson, they make for far more exciting fights: Paulo Filho, Robbie Lawler, Matt Lindland, Yushin Okami, Ryo Chonan rematch and revenge, Jason Miller, Kazuo Misaki, or Akiyama?

Andrei Arlovski’s Pro Boxing Debut!
Andrei Arlovski will be making his Pro Boxing on HBO’s September 13th PPV in Las Vegas, Nevada headlined by Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Joel Casamayor. The opening bout will be against a yet to be determined opponent. An original rumor was that he was going to face Tye Fields (41-2, 37 KOs), however he was KOed by Monte Barret just last weekend, ruining any potential matchup.

Andrei is being coached and readied by boxing great Freddie Roach and has no plans for leaving MMA and is still scheduled on the Affliction: Banned card against Ben Rothwell on July 19th.

New weight classes and rules amendments for MMA!!
On Thursday, a revision of the Unified Rules of MMA were passed by the Association of Boxing Commissions via a majority vote at the ABC’s annual conference spearheaded by the ABC’s MMA Chairman Dale Kliparchuk, New Jersey State Athletic Control Board Deputy Attorney Nick Lembo, ABC President Timothy Leuckenhoff and veteran referee “Big” John McCarthy.

Amendments:

* A fighter who has been struck with a low blow will have up to five minutes to recover. All other fouls will be assessed by a physician, who will make a determination within five minutes if the fighter is fit to continue.

* Illegal Strike to the Back of the head-Crown of the head down the centerline of the skill into the spine, with a 1 inch variance to each side. (Mohawk Definition)

* No smothering the mouth or nose of an opponent, preventing breathing, this does not include choke attempts where a fighter’s mouth is covered by his opponent’s arm.

* Elbow strikes of all kinds are now permissible, except to illegal areas. This means that elbow strikes in the downward “12-to-6 o’clock” motion are allowed.

* Amateur MMA Rules: Amateur bouts will consist of 3, 3-minute rounds with 90-second rest periods. Additional protective equipment MAY be required, including shin guards and instep protection pads, at each commissions own discretion.

The debate on allowing knees to the head of a downed opponent did not make it into the revised regulations for a vote, meaning that the debate will live on until next time.

In addition there are now 14 Men’s weight classes, the weight shown is the CUTOFF. Any weight over, moves you up to the next class:

Flyweight: 105 lbs.
Super Flyweight: 115 lbs
Bantamweight: 125 lbs)
Super Bantamweight: 135 lbs
Featherweight: 145 lbs
Lightweight: 155 lbs
Super Lightweight: 165 lbs
Welterweight: 175 lbs
Super Welterweight: 185 lbs
Middleweight: 195 lbs
Super Middleweight: 205 lbs
Light Heavyweight: 225 lbs
Heavyweight: 265 lbs
Super Heavyweight: 265lbs+

So YES….205# weight class….the old Light Heavyweight class is now the Super Middleweight class. Light Heavyweights now can weigh up to 225#s, and the Heavyweight class goes up to 265#s. Anything higher is Super Heavyweight. I LIKE the new classes. What do you guys think of them? Promotions WILL be required to adopt these new weight classes.

Kimbo Slice Mugshot!
Apparently, Kevin Ferguson (aka Kimbo Slice) was arrested by Miami Beach cops in May 2002 on gun and open container charges which was eventually dismissed, because he entered a no contest plea to the booze charge and was ordered to attend an alcohol education course.

Wilson Reis to fight Brian Caraway at EliteXC
Wilson Reis is officially scheduled to fight Brian Caraway on the July 26th EliteXC: Unfinished Business card at the Stockton Arena in Stockton, California.

Spladdle Blurbs 06/26: Mark Hunt, UFN 17, Lesnar/Comprido, Karo vs. Yoshida, WEC 35!

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

[1]. Mark Hunt has been officially added to DREAM.5!!! Word is that he was offered Sergei Kharitonov, but said it was too short of a notice. He will be offered another opponent.

[2]. The September 17th UFN 15 in Omaha, Nebraska is shaping up!! Look at this!

Houston Alexander vs. Eric Schafer
Gray Maynard vs. Matt Wiman
Josh Neer vs. Nate Diaz
Mac Danzig vs. Clay Guida
Ed Herman vs. Alan Belcher
Joe Lauzon vs. Kyle Bradley

[3]. A rumor is afoot that Karo Parisyan will be fighting Yoshida at UFC 88!

Another fight rumored on the card is Dan Henderson vs. Rousimar Palhares!

[4]. Brock Lesnar has brought in Comprido to help out at the MMMAA!!! Here are some pictures of them training:

[5]. Sergei Kharitonov has verbally agreed to face 6′ 4″ 300#s Antonio Silva on EliteXC’s 2nd episode of Saturday Night Fight on July 26th, pending approval from the California State Athletic Commission.

[6]. Added to the WEC’s August 3rd card are 2 more fights:

Brian Bowles (5-0) vs. Damacio ‘Angel of Death’ Page (10-3)
Micah Miller (9-1) vs. Josh Grispi (8-1)

You may recall the dismantling of Charlie Vallencia by Bowles, who is a fighter to keep your eye on. Though he only has 2 years of training under his belt, he is under the tutelage of Rory and Adam Singer at their Atlanta, Georgia Hardcore Gym, which has spawned Forrest Griffin, Stephen Ledbetter, & Cale Yarbrough. Grispi is coming off a huge win over Mark Hominick.

Also check out Spladdle’s article on the headline fights with Brian Stann, Carlos Condit, and Jamie Varner as well as a fighter spotlight on Marcus ‘The Wrecking Ball’ Hicks who will be challenging Jame Varner for his belt.

I will be doing a complete fight card summary and play by play so be sure to join the RSS feed or come back!
