Main Event Summary
The best way to summarize this fight is one of the greatest PFP fighters in the history of the sport is fighting a “journeyman” who has great punching power and one of the best chins in the sport. The X factor is Anderson has stated he has his eye on retirement, and the question is whether he still has the same passion and motivation, and Cote is not intimidated in the slightest and REALLY wants the win. On paper this fight should be a slaughter and Silva the victor and that’s how I picked it, but this is MMA and when you have a good punch and wearing 4-6 oz gloves anything can happen., i.e. Serra/GSP I or Randleman vs. Cro Cop I. Then there’s that ugly X factor….
Televised Main Card Summary
I really don’t know what to make of the Koscheck.Alves fight. Alves doesn’t have the best takedown defense, and Josh has shown in every fight but the GSP fight that if you are fighting him and he wants you down, you’re going down. Alves hasn’t shown to have made the transition as a sport BJJer into an MMA submission specialist, and has demonstrated by his record that he’d much rather knock your head into the stands. He certainly has the power to put Josh away and I think if he can stay on the outside away from Josh’s shots he can KO Josh, maybe even with a long or flying knee. His best chances for a KO are in the first round. I think Josh will have to weather an early storm, but once he gets rolling he should pull out the decision and possibly the TKO from G&P.
In the Griffin.Sherk fight, we will see a fight by two great wrestlers. What will separate the two will be Sherk’s non-stop pace and work ethic along with his speed. While Tyson is certainly capable, I just think Sherk is too much of a machine.
Gray Maynard.Rich Clementi has FOTN written all over it and so I picked the fans to be the “winner”. I am a fan of both of both fighters and honestly just want to see a great fight. Maynard will certainly be tested in this fight as Clementi is a veteran of over 45 fights with lots of KOs and submissions to his credit. More importantly in the past 2 years he really has seemed to mature as a fighter and has been more dynamic than ever. Maynard has only had 5 fights, but has sent a clear message that he belongs with his win over Frankie Edgar. Gray’s wrestling pedigree insure that he will be a challenge to anyone at 155#s. I give a slight edge in this fight to Clementi, and think he may pull out the win.
Have fun watching the fights guys!
